Given the temperature in today’s world, just saying those two words aloud in 2021 during Black History month is a cringe-worthy thought. While plantations photos define a beautiful architectural period in American history from the outside, they also harken back to the ugly period of slavery from the inside. Now that most of us are communicating through Zoom, I couldn’t help but realize how many people of all races have them in their background. No, I don’t think home owners and landlords should take a sledge hammer to their window treatment. Rather, I chose to shine a light on this topic to raise awareness. However, if the shutter industry decides the term is offensive to descendants of slaves and is no longer acceptable, I think the effort would be applauded.
